The Strawberry Jam Jar
The Sweet Taste of other WWW Sites
|
Ever noticed how so many web pages are simply a collection of links that
take you out to other pages that are also collections of links? Sometimes you
start to wonder if there really is any content out there... Well, not to be one
to break with tradition, here's my take on the standard "hot link"
page.

- Fantasy Role
Playing Games
- Interested in D&D and other Role Playing games? At this page, one of
the oldest sites dedicated to Fantasy Role Playing, you can read up on the
topic, find interesting best-of-???? lists, and access the Fantasy Role-Playing
USENET news groups from here. You can even find some very nice fantasy-oriented
graphics. Have Fun!
- More FRPG Stuff:
- I'm actually rather fond of RPG's in general, so I've included a few more
general FRPG links below. I've also been playing in one D&D world known as
Mystara since 1993 and there are a few Mystara specific links included. If you
like FRPG's, and you've never heard of Mystara, you might consider checking some
of these links out -- it is one of the most well developed, complex commercial
gaming worlds I've seen.
- The Star
Wars Page (Unofficial)
- Great collection of Star Wars related trivia, information and
what-not. There is even a full transcript of the dialogue between Han Solo and
Guido, the green bounty hunter he kills in the canteena scene. If you've ever
considered yourself to be a Star Wars fan, you should check this site
out.
- Fantasy & Science Fiction Books:
- Obviously I enjoy fantasy and science fiction, and this includes reading
it. Below is a collection of links to web pages dedicated to some of my
favourite authors and/or their books. If you've never heard of some of them,
you might find some of these pages intriguing enough to try them out.
- The Disney Page
- Any set of links about fantasy should include one to the Disney page, the
home of Disney, the grandfather of all the animation studios. Just like the
various Magic Kingdoms, the Disney Page reaches out to the child in all of us.

Links to Games and Activities on the Web.
- RIDDLER!!!
- This is the first real Internet "Game Show", where you can sign
up and compete for monetary prizes. The game is roughly a combination of
scavenger hunt, trivia questions and riddle solving, with clues which will lead
you all across the WWW. Give your brain some exercise, and maybe win some $$$
while you're at it!
- Mountain Biking Around Vancouver, BC, Canada
- My husband, Ron, loves to mountain bike, and so we went out and found
several local Web Sites that apply to his favourite sport. The Vancouver Lower
Mainland is one of the best mountain bike areas in North America -- Just ask
Alison Sidor, Mountain Bike Silver Medallist in the 1996 Olympics, who lives and
rides the North Shore Mountains!
- On-line Interactive "Divination":
- One of my more peculiar hobbies is that I've learned how to read Tarot
Cards. I enjoy using them to help clarify current life situations for
myself and my friends. Note, however, that I don't necessarily think that there
is anything "mystic" about the cards. Instead I recognize that each
card has historically been assigned one of many archetypal life events and/or
emotions, such as "A painful ending leading to the possibility of a new
beginning" or "True and lasting love". Since each of these
things occur in everyone's life, the cards and their arrangement simply provide
a method of coming up with suggestions for a different direction of thought
about a life situation. The cards are a great tool for making you more aware of
points of view that you might not have thought of before.
Below are a selection of links to some on-line divination programs provided
by Façade, which are at least fun to try, even if they aren't
particularly enlightening:
- CyberMUD
Web Page
- This is an experiment in "adventure gaming" via the World Wide
Web. The first of it's kind, it uses the same approach as a text adventure
video game to allow travel, exploration and actions.
- Addventure
- Addventure (no that's not a spelling mistake) is an interesting
twist on the old Choose Your Own Adventure Story/Game. In this
particular game you can follow the story where ever it leads you by choosing
different paths until you get to an unfinished room, then it is up to you to
continue the story. Go ahead and check out the many current story lines, and
maybe add your own bit of nonsense too!
![[www libraray]](images/library.gif)
Links to Net 'Zines and Reading Related Materials.
- Net Surfers Digest
- The Net Surfers Digest is Required Reading for any true Net
Surfer. With information on new and interesting net sites, net software, and
other net-related topics this is a digital publication worth reading on a
regular basis!
- Fantasy & Science Fiction Books:
- Jump back to my Fantasy and Science Fiction section for a list of sites
related to some of my favourite Fantasy and Science Fiction Authors and Books.
- The Round Robin Storybook
- If you like to read and/or write any kind of fiction, this site might just
be your cup of tea. This page archives the existing chapters of several Round
Robin Stories which were written exclusively via email. The authors are all
amateurs, writing for the enjoyment of it, but we are all serious about the
quality of our creative writing and so the reading is good. And, if you don't
know what a Round Robin Story is, never fear, this web page also includes a link
to information describing just what they are, and gives suggestions on how those
with the creative spirit can start their own. Come on in and enjoy a relaxing
read or two.
![[arts & entertainment]](images/arts.gif)
Links to Artistic and Entertainment Web Sites.
- the green cART magazine
- This is a multimedia art zine for modern masses. Stories, graphics,
comics, poetry, interviews, reviews, music, theatre, and much much more:
"We are Global Art for Global Peace. We are interactive art for
artists. We are today's vehicle for art."
WARNING
This
site frequently contains art which is of an Erotic nature.
- Vatican
Art Exhibit
- The Vatican gave permission to use digital representations of much of their
art in this "experiment in digital art presentation". The site is set
up as a Virtual Museum where you begin your explorations in the "Main Hall".
From there you can enter specific areas, such as the "Music Hall",
and "Mathematics Hall" and go on to explore the "rooms"
inside that contain examples of digitized art works.
- The
Cloud Gallery
- The Cloud Gallery is an art collection of photographs with clouds as the
theme. The images are beautiful and are in the public domain, so you may view
them and use them as you please.

- Yahoo! and
Yahoo! Canada
- Yahoo Provides a forms-searchable database of categorized WWW URL's. It is
also possible to add any URL's that you know about but can't find in their
database. Yahoo! is my starting point of choice when I am looking for pages in
a specific topic/category. What is really neat is that they've recently created
sub-domains of the Yahoo! database that is country, region or city specific.
Yahoo! Canada is listed above as an example, but there are several
more.
- Alta-Vista Search
- Alta-Vista Search allows you to do a search of the "entire WWW"
(or at least as much of it as their WebBot has been able to locate). Alta-Vista
is nice because you can specify more search criteria than just keywords, such
as "page must have this word in the title", "page must have this
word in its URL", etc. They also allow for Boolean (AND, OR, NOT) queries,
so that you can broaden or narrow your search. Alta-Vista is my starting point
of choice when I am looking for a more general collection of pages on a topic,
or if I am searching for a vague idea which might be expressed in multiple ways.
- The Strawberry Facts Page
-
Do you like strawberries? This is a page dedicated to all
things strawberry related: recipes, gardening tips, nutrition, trivia,
festivities and more. Find out all you ever wanted to know, and more, about
the beautiful, delicious, red fruit that we call the strawberry.
- Coast to Coast Net, SimTel
Archives
- The SimTel archives is one of the best places to locate free- and
share-ware programs. There is also an extensive C/C++ source code repository
which contains tonnes of free library files that you can download and import
into your own programs (Why re-invent a linked list, when someone else has done
it for you?)
- URouLette
- Step right up! Try your Luck! Spin the Wheel and See where you
land! A winner almost every time! Hey-ya!
Step Right Up ...
URouLette was the first random
World Wide Web site ever developed. Created at the University of Kansas,
selecting the link will take you to a random page it pulls out of its database
of known URL's. Some of the more interesting places I've found in my travels
over the web were found from here -- step up and give it a whirl.
- Alpha Phi International
Women's Fraternity
- Alpha Phi was the first Woman's Greek Society to put up a web page. This
is significant to me because I became a pledge of the Beta-Theta Chapter of
Alpha Phi in October 1996 and was initiated as a member on my 19th Birthday,
March 15, 1997. I've been involved ever since, and feel that it is one of the
most long-lasting and relevant things I did at the time. I have held the
position of Treasurer for the Alpha Phi Vancouver Alumnae Association, and I
continue to help the active Beta-Theta Chapter whenever I can (especially during
the Formal Rush Period each Fall Semester.)
